Amazon Product Images

Having good Amazon product images is one of the keys to a great listing that converts. You need images that are clean and beautiful, and that comply with the guidelines for Amazon product images. Be careful about uploading just any pictures that you happen to have of your stocked products. Quality photos are one of the basic foundations of a successful Amazon product.

Below are Amazon’s own guidelines and some additional insights on creating optimized photos for your Amazon product images. Use these tips to guide you as you work on creating those photos that will push your listings to get higher click through rates, grab more attention, and convert better.

Requirements for Amazon Product Images

You can find the complete guidelines on product photos on the Amazon support pages, but here they are in brief:

    • Use only TIFF (.tif/.tiff), JPEG (.jpeg/.jpg), GIF (.gif) and PNG (.png) formats in sRGB or CMYK color mode
    • Ensure cropped dimensions of at least 1000 x 1000 pixels for upload
    • Name files with the product identifier (Amazon ASIN, 13-digit ISBN, EAN, JAN, or UPC) followed by a period and the appropriate file extension (Example: B000123456.jpg or 0237425673485.tif) without spaces, dashes or additional characters

Amazon Product Images guidelines

Main variant images:

  • the cover art or a professional photograph of the product being sold
  • in focus with smooth edges
  • professionally lit and photographed or scanned with realistic color
  • Drawings or illustrations (including digitally altered colors, etc.), text, graphics, inset images and gratuitous or confusing additional objects are not allowed as or in main product images.
  • Books, Music, and Video/DVD images should be the front cover art and fill 100% of the image frame.
  • Jewel cases, promotional stickers, and cellophane are not allowed.
  • All other products should fill 85% or more of the image frame with the full product must be in frame.
  • Backgrounds must be pure white (RGB 255,255,255)
  • Pornographic and offensive materials are not allowed.

Other images:

  • must be of, or pertain to, the product being sold
  • must be in focus with smooth edges, professionally lit and photographed or scanned with realistic color
  • Other products or objects are allowed as they help demonstrate the use or scale of the product.
  • The product and props should fill 85% or more of the image frame.
  • Cropped or close-up images, backgrounds and environments, text and demonstrative graphics are allowed.
  • Pornographic and offensive materials are not allowed.

The main takeaway from these guidelines is that your main Amazon product images should be nothing more than the highest quality photo of nothing but your product. Get the product to fill as much of the frame as possible. Make sure that you are showing the most appealing and practical angle of the product. Take professional quality photos – or have them done for you – and name them accordingly. Make sure you have high resolution copies of your Amazon product images in the approved formats. Before you upload them, inspect them for any flaws and have them touched up as needed.

Why Optimize Amazon Product Images?

Let’s look at a couple of vital facts on Amazon and the buyer mindset:

1. Amazon’s idea of a good conversion rate is 15% compared to 5% or less on other Ecommerce sites. You need all the help you can get to bring visitors to your listing and capture their attention long enough to make the sale.

2. Images are one of the most highly enticing elements of a product listing. Customers are not likely to spend a lot of tome on your listing if they can’t clearly see your product. They trust images more than words.

Amazon Product Images angles

You may not need the whole set of 9 photos, but make sure that each one meets the standards and is useful to the customer. Take the different angles of your product so that customers can see it from all sides. Have one of the product label if this provides good information. Highlight features in your Amazon product images. Include descriptive illustrations or enhance shots with explanatory text or objects that demonstrate its size. Do shoppers ask questions? Be proactive and try to incorporate the answers in your Amazon product images.

Whenever applicable, include photos of your product in use. Action shots aptly demonstrate a product’s versatility and quickly explain its applications. This generates interest and helps customers better understand why they should but it.

Amazon Product Images action

A good set of images combines the artful with the practical. Consider the look and feel of the Amazon product images you are creating. Think also about the information that they are bringing across to your prospective customers. Modify, test, improve and retest. The end result is worth your time and effort.

Most Amazon product images aren’t that great, so taking the time to get these guidelines down will already give you a leg up over the competition. In addition, Amazon is always watching, so your beautiful Amazon product images are likely to get your listings noticed and ranked.
